    Hi Guys,
I am unable to make it on Monday to class but was wondering if as we implement our programs this coming school year if there was any interest in staying in touch as a support system for each other?

    panel debrief
I am pleased that we were able to have such an involved group of students be a part of our panel discussion. The students are are both confident and caring and have gained social and organizational skills that will carry them into adulthood. Ginny, I agree that there seems there would be little doubt as to the value of service learning after speaking with the panel. It is quite obvious that the panel has learned an numerous life lessons through their involvement with SL.

I agree the panel was fabulous PR for the program! If I could only get them to come to a staff meeting or a student grade level meeting at my school I am sure the staff and students would be hooked. Several of Ray's students did come to my school three years ago to begin a service initiative, we had four hundred and fifty sixth graders in the gym listening to two high school students and you could have heard a pin drop. Our sixth graders were on board, spending time learning about the project and spreading the word. I think the panel showed us that the students need to be interested, the problem needs to be real. It also appeared that they had all spent a considerable amount of time reflecting on what they learned about each service situation and about themselves. Recognizing that they exponentially increased their confidence level in their own abilities. I know that Connie(the girl in the blue dress) was required to do service learning as part of an English class in college. She reported to me that some of the students were paralized, not knowing what to do or how to begin. Connie jumped in, found a situation that met her needs and continued working in a soup kitchen long after her class had ended.

    CSL and Young Learners
I was really struck by this article and how crucial it is to adopt programs at the elementary level to engage and hook students into school and learning. I was really taken back to think that while in the third grade a young man could make the decision to quit school when he turns 16. And he is not alone. There are so many others just like him. But there is also alot that we, as educators, can do to to prevent this. I really liked the Penny Harvest idea. There is an analogy between the little penny and our little students. At my school, students have collected Pennies for Patients for the past few years. Everyone is always pleasantly surprised by how much the kids can collect and how enthusiastic they can be. The Penny Harvest takes collecting pennies a step further and gives the kids empowerment. Great Idea!

Good luck with the room cleaning! I was very impressed with how involved and passionate you daughter and the other students were about their experiences. They showed a great deal of confidence and self assurance. I can't imagine that anyone who after speaking with these students would be left with any doubts about the value of service learning. The panel was the best PR for the program.

although I didn't get to actually sit in on the discussion, I am lucky to be the mom of one of the panelists. I talk with her a lot about her experience and I can hear the passion in her voice and have seen some changes in her that have occured because of her experiences. It is definately shaping the wonderful person she is growing into. Ray has gotten her to work in grave yards, dig trenches, work in food banks, animal shelters, etc. The question that I still have for mr. Kane is if he could get her to also clean her room!

    Panel De-brief
What a great group of kids! I was so impressed with their maturity, their insight and the contributions they brought to the discussion. It was obvious that this experience has changed them forever. When they recall their high-school years, community service learning will be the highlight.
